paul talbot is an artist who works within the field of painting, where text-based art is predominant. talbot also utilises the benefits of mixed media, printmaking, and copper to create pieces which viewers may be challenged or walk away laughing
after a career spanning more than 37 years in education, he transitioned to full-time artistic practice following his retirement in december 2024. this shift enabled sustained engagement with a studio-based practice rooted in his undergraduate studies and supported a more reflective, process-led approach to making.
his work focuses on text-based practice, where language operates as both visual material and conceptual framework. through the development of distinct bodies of work, he explores repetition, constraint, and material experimentation as methods of enquiry. research and self-directed learning are central to his practice, informing both conceptual development and technical processes.
participation in open calls and competitive exhibitions functions as a critical means of situating his work within a wider contemporary context. during 2025, his work was exhibited in galleries and shows across yorkshire, london, and internationally, with over 35 works entering public and private collections.
the establishment of a bespoke studio has provided a dedicated environment for sustained experimentation and production. his practice continues to evolve through ongoing research, exhibition opportunities, and the potential for future solo presentation.
