‘crepuscular’
‘shafts of light’
the composition quietly echoes my earlier ‘through the trees’ work, gradually loosening and softening as it moves towards abstraction. forms become less defined, allowing memory, landscape and imagination to sit alongside one another.
it is a familiar place, though not quite one i can locate - a landscape that has remained somewhere in the background, quietly returning.
the composition is informed by solitary walks and the heightened awareness that comes with slowing down and observing the landscape. in the depths of winter, shafts of light appear briefly, illuminating branches, paths, and the spaces between them, exploring the fleeting transformation of a winter woodland. fragments of light and shadow interrupt, creating moments of warmth within an otherwise restrained winter palette.. nothing to chase. nothing to achieve. just a moment to pause, look, and be present. everything becomes bathed in colour; - bold oranges, crepuscular blues, hopeful yellows. the changing light briefly transformed a familiar landscape
rather than depicting a specific place, the painting explores the relationship between observation, memory and atmosphere.
the work reflects a quiet moment of pause—the point at which familiar surroundings become unfamiliar through changing light, and the act of looking becomes an experience.
