‘emergence’
the light appears
the composition quietly echoes my earlier ‘through the trees’ work, gradually loosening and softening as it moves towards abstraction. forms become less defined, allowing memory, landscape and imagination to sit alongside one another
it is a familiar place, though not quite one i can locate - a landscape that has remained somewhere in the background, quietly returning.
taking a pause invites clarity. in a world where activity is often mistaken for progress, this may seem counterintuitive, but nature offers its own testimony. rather than depicting a single walk. the painting weaves together fragments of many journeys and recollections. woodland paths merge with remembered routes, creating a landscape that exists somewhere between observation and experience.
then there is the light.
when the light changes, creating a mixture of glows, colours vibrate against the trees, dusk or sunrise in the autumn, all collide and in that moment change and clarity combine.
living where we do, dusk or dawn often brings a remarkable glow across the valley. it is a fleeting light that we see regularly and capture it as best we can. watching as the landscape softens and settles into that familiar luminosity then threads its way through the painting, illuminating the woodland and lending warmth to the trees and pathways
