'thank you mam'
the phrase came about first, that was outlined as text on the paper, the image was one that is a very well known piece by roy lichtenstein
whaam! is a 1963 diptych painting, it is one of the best-known works of pop art, and among his most important paintings
i've always liked pop art, its boldness and simple colours, the way it challenges traditional art by mixing "high" art with mass media and popular culture. this piece does, i feel, downplays the artist's hand and the idea of originality.
part of the pure series that explores short phrases or sentences. they are simple to look at, yet they can hide a complex process of colour choices, positioning and relationship to the text. there's a saying that a picture paints a thousand words, but sometimes a phrase or a selection of words can raise questions or take you on a journey. it all depends on the words used and what order they are placed. It's an adventure creating vivid images from my weirdly fascinating mind, which is not always pure!
or in fact, the words just might make you smile
